Culture + Place Preservation is a historic and cultural preservation consultancy based in San Diego, California. We work with government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private entities to discover, document, and sustain the cultural heritage that gives communities their identity and sense of place. Our work centers both tangible and intangible heritage—historic buildings and sites, legacy businesses, traditions, stories, art, and lived experiences that shape how communities understand themselves.
Through research, documentation, community engagement, and interpretation, we help clients identify how the past continues to influence cultural life today and ensure that this heritage remains visible, valued, and accessible for present and future generations. By connecting culture and place, our work strengthens communities, supports economic and educational opportunities, and responds to ongoing challenges such as urbanization, gentrification, climate change, and long-term disinvestment.

Bennett King
After more than 25 years working in digital design, I chose to shift my professional focus toward a more people-centered and place-based practice. What began as a career designing technology evolved into a deeper commitment to understanding and sustaining the cultures we nurture, the landscapes we inhabit, and the stories that shape our communities. This transition led me to historic and cultural preservation as a way to align my skills with my values.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in History from California State University, Fresno, and a Master of Arts in Historic Preservation from Goucher College. Over the past three years, I have worked with government agencies and nonprofit organizations on preservation-related projects, collaborating with planners, advocates, and community members to document, interpret, and protect both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. My background in human-centered design informs my approach to preservation—grounded in careful listening, thoughtful observation, and an understanding of how people interact with place. Today, I focus on preserving cultures and places for the people who live within them, and I look forward to supporting your project with care, curiosity, and collaboration.
